Charlie

I keep forgetting to post these pictures. They're several weeks old at this point, but cute nonetheless.

Everyone, meet Charlie.

Or, rather, see him again.
First, here. Then, here. And again, here. Another time, here. And lastly, here.

Charlie was one of our puppies. And we gave him to our friend, Phillip. Well, technically to Phillip's parents, since Phillip was still in Tanzania, where he was spending a couple of years working with the Peace Corps. But he's HOME now! And when we went to see him, there was the added bonus of getting to hang out with Charlie too!

He's a good combination of Rosie and Ollie. Rosie's size. Oliver's good looks. And just the right balance of both parents' personality. And I love that brown nose!!

Seeing Double

Once upon a time, we had puppies. (Actually it was last October.) They were super cute. And super messy. And they all left the house by the first of January.

This little one is Biggums.

He belongs to Philip & Courtney.

Courtney bought him as a surprise for Philip for Christmas. She wanted "one like Rosie" -- small.
I'd say we gave her the closest thing to Rosie that we could possibly have given. They came over for dinner and brought Biggums with them last night. And it was kinda difficult to tell them apart!

The Post-Holiday Update

This holiday season went by entirely too quickly. In list format, here's what all happened that I didn't blog about:

  • Some of the puppies were bought as Christmas presents, so we did a little late-night delivering on Christmas Eve. One was picked up from my office on Friday. One was picked up from Kyle's mom's house while we were visiting her for Christmas. And we dropped two off on our way home from Hampton. We've heard back from almost all the puppies' new families and it seems everyone is doing well. They each have a good home. Now it's time for a little snip-snip so we don't have to deal with this again!! :)
  • Christmas. We had a nice one with both of our families -- and together. That's enough about that.
I think that just about catches us up through the New Year's Party. So let me go upload some photos and I'll get on that post. :)

Moving Out!

They named her Cocoa. She gets along with her big "sister" Sandy (a 12-week old beagle puppy) very well. She left our house on Saturday morning - the first of the puppies to "move out".

Tonight, the rest get shots! Should be a fun night. And then Turk and the as-yet-unnamed-Twin "move out" too. We'll be down to four until Christmas, when we behave like Santa Claus and do three deliveries. :-D

We still have one who is unclaimed. And some very VERY dirty carpet.

Oh geez.

There are times when I come face-to-face with my own corniness and ... it just astounds me. Like the fact that I was tempted to title this post "Who let the dogs out?" That is just ... bad!

But the pups DID go out this weekend. For the first time without being carried outside, they toddled their own little way out the door. And usually, after being forced outside, they sit by the door and whine until you come let them back in. Not so this time. Instead they covered the whole yard, and until I disturbed their pattern, they followed around like a cloud behind Rosie, trying to eat.

(l-r)
"Girl Ollie". The only girl. She has learned to defend herself in a room full of brothers.
She's going to Mr. Bobby, who will train her to "run squirrels".
Charlie. The chocolate beagle. He's going to Phillip Shealy - our friend who is currently in Tanzania with the Peace Corps. He comes home in June. (But don't worry - Charlie goes to Dr. & Mrs. Shealy at Christmas!)
"As Yet Unnamed Black Puppy". One of "The Twins". This one has been claimed by a nice couple by the names of Timothy & Jennifer. Really, I think the puppy chose them. He settle right nicely into Timothy's lap when they came over to see the pups.

The big shake on such a little dog ... it kills me!

Dakota. This one is the puppy that Maggie named "Dakota".
He will be a Christmas surprise for some very excited kids in our area.

"Boy Ollie" gets curious about the camera.

"Boy Ollie" and Turk are playing, while "The Twins" pose for a shot.

Turk is going to live with our friend Ben. His coloring always makes people look twice.
He's a chocolate beagle with a red face. I can't wait to see what he looks like when he's grown.
And those blue eyes ... Ben's in trouble.

I love this picture because it effectively communicates what life with seven puppies is like: Busy.
They're always doing their own thing. "Girl Ollie" is practicing for her future job as a hunter.

"Boy Ollie". If Kyle could name one thing better than having Oliver as a pet, it would be having TWO Olivers. And this one is the SPITTING IMAGE of Oliver. He looks just like him (down to his little freckled nose) and has his same temperament, down the fact that you literally have to make him get up and walk around when you're trying to feed him. He's a lazy boy. Just like his daddy. He'll be a good pet ... for someone else. :-D

(Clay ... email that picture to Bill & Julia!) :-D

Puppies ... Again!

Are you getting sick of the puppy pictures yet? I'm not.

This one looks exactly like Rosie, except that Rosie never had the little mark on her head.
It's tiny like her.

Puppies ... again.

I've been looking forward to when their eyes open up. But really, now that it's starting to happen, it's actually kinda gross.

Here are some pictures that a friend took last weekend.

Puppy Update

This is a picture of me and Maggie holding the puppy she has aptly named "Blacky-Browny". My friend Amy brought her two girls over to see the puppies yesterday. Maggie helped me to name the puppies: Blacky-Browny (seen above), Browny-Blacky (they're nearly identical), Blacky-Whitey, Whitey-Blacky, Browny, Dakota, and Charlie.

Whitey-Blacky (the only female in the bunch) is the only one who's been spoken for "officially", but we have several friends who are interested in the rest of the pups. Their eyes and ears are still closed, but they're becoming more active. Blacky-Whitey is starting to try to pick himself up on his legs instead of just pushing around on his belly. I'm sure the others will follow soon after. He is the biggest of the bunch at this point. His legs are shaped like Oliver's. We think he'll be built like Ollie.

Blacky-Browny is the smallest and his coloring is very similar to Rosie's. We wonder if he'll look just like this in about two weeks:

The stats:

All seven puppies and their momma took a trip to the vet yesterday. They were doted on by nearly every vet and tech at the facility. There are 6 boys and 1 girl, all weighing in between .2 lbs and .4 lbs -- one was so light that it hardly even registered on the scale.

They're all eating very well and mostly at their own initiating. There's one puppy who we have to wake up and remind that he's hungry, but he's figuring it out. We just pick him up and put him in the right place and he figures it out from there.

Rosie is a very good mommy! Even the doctors said so. She's very attentive and has had no problem feeding or cleaning the pups. The only thing we can't figure out is how she sits on her puppies so often ... apparently, without even knowing it! We'll hear the poor things start squealing and know "Rosie must've repositioned herself again."

We're having fun with the puppies. They have really required little maintenance as far as feedings and things. They pretty much take care of their own stuff -- which has been nice! Can you imagine if I'd have had to bottle-feed seven puppies every two hours?! I still check on them every few hours or so through the day and night, but Rosie does a good job of taking care of them so I don't have to.

Everybody checked out ok at the vet yesterday. They start their vaccinations and preventative worm-treatments the next few weeks. So we'll have seven healthy puppies for seven lucky families this Christmas!

That is, if I win the "argument". Kyle wants to keep one. Three beagles?!?!

Welcome to My World ...

So Saturday was fun. Kyle had his surgery on Thursday. He was dead to the world on Thursday and Friday and was coming around on Saturday. Which meant the pain was coming around too. Fortunately his mom was on her way to help take care of The Patient.

It was during the time that we were first waking up, when I had first let Rosie and Oliver outside to "go potty" that I became distracted with pain pills and people breakfast. The next thing I knew, Rosie was under the shed in the backyard. "Nesting". And completely out of reach.

After we tried using a hot dog and two Milk Bone treats to lure her out, a borrowed can of tuna from the neighbor across the street did the trick. And I grabbed her and we ran inside.

The first puppy was in the middle of the studio floor before we even realized what was happening.

I shall decline to describe the meltdown that happened when Rosie ran away from the puppy instead of cleaning it up, or really acknowledging it at all. I had to ... bleh. Do a lot of gross things.

Fortunately Mila was already on the way, so she picked up where I left off. Which meant she had a LOT of work to do, as I was a basketcase. "But Rosie is supposed to do this! Why is she trying to get behind the sofa!?"

That was at 2:15. At 10 PM - nearly 8 hours later - the "birthing team" (which consisted of Mila and Amy and, briefly, my friend Amanda) had left and Rosie was left to tend her 8 new puppies.

Last night the runt died. She was soooo tiny. You could see her little rib cage.

So seven. Seven beagle puppies. Wow.

Who wants a really cute Christmas present?

Because Rosie is currently working on knitting some together and they'll be ready just in time to come home with you for Christmas!

They'll be some cute combination of a standard, tri-color English beagle and a small bluetick beagle.

Some combination of laid-back, "please leave me alone and just don't forget to feed me" and "must kiss you in the face! always! every single time i see you! iloveyouloveyouloveyou!"

I know you want one.
