She is done!!
Kyle got this email today:

Good news my friend....She is done!! Sending her out today! I will send you pics right now. You are going to be blown away. She sounds amazing. Let me know when you get her and what you think....damn she looks amazing! - JCSo if you see my husband any time soon and you find a peculiarly large smile on his face, this is what that email is all about:

For his birthday this year, we ordered a new snare drum. And if you know Kyle, you know that this decision was not a quick one for him. No, he labored over the finish, the hardware, the wood type, the dimensions, and every conceivable detail on this drum -- even a couple that he had specially added in. And if this picture is any indication, his toils were well worth it. And next time he plays his drums, it won't be on a borrowed snare!

At one point, I posted this. And now it's August. So tonight's the night.
Me. Jeff Tweedy. His guitars. In the same room. And sharing the experience with my husband and some of our closest friends. Is there a better way to spend an evening? I submit that there is not.
But I'll let you know for sure tomorrow!

I'm going to be a member of the Polyphonic Spree one day. No, not really, but it would be a lot of fun.
Which reminds me of a story. One time, we saw John Vanderslice play at the Map Room. His opening act was St. Vincent. It was fantastic. Her name is Annie Clark. She is awesome. She played along on a couple of songs during John's set. (This seems so personal. No, we're not on a first-name basis at this point, but Vanderslice is not an easy name to type, so ... John it is.)
Anyway. She was still on stage with bass guitar in hand during the song when he invited everyone up on stage to sing his last song with him. And the following non-monumental but funny conversation ensued.
Kyle (to friend, Andrew): Crazy! All these people! It's like the Polyphonic Spree.
Annie Clark (having overheard that comment): Oh, did you play with the Polyphonic Spree?
Kyle: Ha! No.
Annie: Oh. I did.
And then we were later watching this movie and saw her on there. Which struck us as odd, since she'd downplayed the connection, like "Yeh, once back in the day ... "

Meet The New Addition
Transcription from a phone call yesterday afternoon:
Kyle: What's the best thing that could possibly happen to me today?
Rita: Your boss quit or got fired.
Kyle: Hmm ... no. Second best.
What he was referencing was this:

Meet Roxanne.
New to Kyle, but this is a late '50s kit, making it right at 50 years old. He had acquired a cymbal some time ago that was actually quite valuable but he just couldn't seem to make it work for him. So he was taking it around to several area drummers and trying to sell it to them.
Yesterday, he found a guy who was willing to trade him the cymbal for this kit. And I'm pretty sure you can't beat that deal with a stick. (Pun completely intended.)

Explosions in the Sky
Our friends Andrew and Emily and Zach were in town this weekend. I guess the main reason would have to be that they came to see the American Played Music & Lyrics of Whiskey and Perfume. (So much retardedness that we narrowly missed at the Map Room on Friday night! But believe you me, mullets of that caliber do not come without years of grooming. My hat's off to these guys. Plus they also have that "Butt" song.)
In reality, we all had tickets to see Explosions in the Sky on Saturday night and that was the "big event" of the weekend.
So here are some pictures ... and a link to the rest of the pictures so Andrew can get the ones he wants.

I typically try to reserve judgment on live music until I've gotten a good enough taste of it to make a sound judgment. Their opening act was not good! In fact, he was terrible. NOT the kind of music you want to listen to live ... or at all really!
But their music, on the other hand ... exquisite! And worth the wait!

Move for a Change
This week, the Village Tavern is hosting "Move for a Change". As a fundraiser, this probably needs a little more organization, but ... the idea is a good starting point. Local act, Leslie, is headlining every night this week - and each night they're featuring other local acts as their openers. Each show is all ages and no cover charge. Their method to raise funds is to sell raffle tickets for items like gift cards to restaurants and Urban Outfitters, and also ... $3 Killians, $1 of which goes to the Charity du Jour. Last night's was the Ronald McDonald House.
Kyle and I got out there last night to see All Get Out -- a combination of Mel Washington and a guy whose name I don't recall, but who used to perform with The Explorers Club, but I'm assuming he doesn't anymore since he's not in any of the SXSW pictures on their blog.
And also some small band called The Working Title. (Just kidding. They're kind of a big deal.)
And, of course, the camera was at the ready for most of the night. But unfortunately the tripod was not. And so what came of an evening's worth of photos were lots of fuzziness ... but oh well. Here are some of the better ones.

Daddy's Girls
Our roommate Andrew's mom sang at the Map Room the other night. They asked me to take pictures. This was a fun learning experience for me, as I am still kinda just learning how to use the new camera. Thought I'd share some of the good ones.
This was a group of three ladies who sang songs made popular by The Andrews Sisters. It was so much fun to watch! They were good!

Too Cute!
This is just too cute not to link to:
My Daddy is On My Way
This is the blog of Josh, a friend of ours from college. The video is of his daughter, Rainy, who makes a solid soloist! She's performing her rendition of his original which can be heard here.

Boooo!
The concert that we were looking forward to on Friday night (see this) has been postponed until August! Because they're apparently going to be on Saturday Night Live.
Losers.

Shameless Plug
Kyle just showed me that our friend Chris has some new songs up on his virb site. Um ... wow. You should go check it out. Maybe you'll crap your pants like I did.
Chris, should you ever come across this site ... you've come a long way since the Beach Song. :) We're so proud of you.

The votes are in and ...
Kyle's band had the chance to play at the Music Farm in Charleston on Saturday. They had been invited by the lovely folks at Localx - a Sunday night radio show on 98x that had been playing their CD for the past few weeks - to compete for a chance to record a track for their A Very Local Xmas compilation.
And after an evening of hard-rocking music, the Patron Saints twanged it up and were followed by a group we were quite impressed with called OutTrap.
And when the votes were calculated, the Patron Saints tied for first.
And the radio show recommended a game of Hungry, Hungry Hippos to settle the matter of whose song would be included on the CD and who would win a discounted recording at Fusion 5 Studios. The guys aren't available for said game, so they gave the "rewards" to the other band - Blindsyght.
But the bragging rights ... those cannot be reclaimed.
Congratulations, guys.

More Photos
I love the way pictures can take you back. There's a reason why people budget so much of their wedding funds for photography, why new parents follow their child around with a camera documenting its every movement, and why hanging pictures in a house helps to make it a home.
I don't know if words could adequately describe how much fun I had last Wednesday. But these pictures help me to remember. The quiet that exists between friends. The conversations that are more than just chatty banter. Sharing life. Sharing kitchen utensils and cutting boards. And, in the case of these pictures, sharing an evening of music for a chance to remember it all.
Thanks for the pictures.

Wilco Live
There are a few other pictures in my picasa album.
Last night was:
- Late
- Fun
- Far Away
- Amazing
- Worth the drive (and the 2 AM car-sickness!)
Ever since Sunken Treasure came out, I have told Kyle I-don't-know-how-many times that hearing Jeff Tweedy play an intimate, solo show like that would be like heaven. I was right. I got a taste of it when the opened with this:
Highlights of the show:
- On & On... I didn't really expect to hear this one. It was awesome.
- Nels' crazy feet! He was having a good time last night!
- About halfway through the show, Jeff said, "You two! Right in front of me! Would you please just get a room? What you're doing is bordering on indecent. I thought it would last through one song, like "your song" or whatever. But it's been every song! (something inaudible to band) We're gonna play another song. (to couple) Want us to play some more slow jams for you?" Hilarious. Apparently they cooled it off because after the next song he said, "Is he gone? Did I run him off? You didn't even know that guy, did you?"
- Kidsmoke ROCKED!!
- Getting to see our friend Ben get his face rocked off by Wilco Live for the first time! He was having a great time!
- Being in the same room with Jeff Tweedy.
- ... and his guitar
- ... while he sang

Braggadocious
May I please take a moment to brag on my husband and his band, the Patron Saints? They played a show on Saturday night. A show which goes down in history as The Night A Lesser-Known Charleston Band Put Cary Ann Hearst (by way of The Jesse Janes) To Shame.
